Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of friends, family, and ancestors who have passed away. Traditions include building altars decorated with photos, favorite foods, and special belongings of loved ones who have died. Marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased are placed on altars as offerings. Families often visit and decorate graves of loved ones at local cemeteries. Parades, festivals, and vigils are also held to welcome the spirits.

The holiday provides a chance to remember our cherished loved ones who have passed and rejoice in their lives. Sharing funny and poignant stories can help us process grief. But for some, the anguish of losing someone close can be profound and enduring.

If you are struggling with the death of a loved one, know that there are healthy ways to manage grief. Consider seeking out help from a behavioral health professional or joining a bereavement support group to connect with others experiencing similar emotions. Talk to a counselor or clergy member for guidance. Express your feelings through writing, art, music or other creative outlets. Spend time with people who can listen compassionately. And be patient with yourself – grief takes time and everyone handles it differently.
